Fixing without digging: Kelowna taps into technology to repair sewer pipeline

Nearly 3 kilometres of sewer pipeline, including a section crossing Highway 97, needs repair

Trenchless technology means the city will not have to dig up roads to replace 2.7 kilometres of sewer pipeline in need of repair.

Instead, Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) will be used to repair a section of line running along Hardy Street, Enterprise Way, Enterprise Court, Parkinson Way, Sutherland Avenue, Burtch Road, and through the Parkinson Recreation Centre parking lot.

含羞草研究社淭he problem started in 2018 at a key intersection in town,含羞草研究社 explained Rod MacLean, utilities planning manager. 含羞草研究社淰ideo inspection showed that the pipe had deteriorated underneath the intersection of Sutherland Avenue and Burtch Road.含羞草研究社

The steel reinforced pipe is 40 years old but should last 80 years, MacLean said.

含羞草研究社淲hat含羞草研究社檚 important about that one is that all the flow comes from across the highway in two areas, so we were concerned about this.含羞草研究社

The project was stalled by COVID and then design and constructibility issues. Replacing the pipe with traditional construction would be time-consuming and more costly.

含羞草研究社淲e really didn含羞草研究社檛 want to dig under the highway if we didn含羞草研究社檛 have to,含羞草研究社 MacLean added.

CIPP technology injects material into the pipe through a manhole with it traveling in both directions.

含羞草研究社淚t含羞草研究社檚 like a balloon that gets pushed through the pipe含羞草研究社t goes in heated含羞草研究社hich finishes the cure,含羞草研究社 MacLean said. 含羞草研究社淏asically what you get is a blue PVC pipe inside except it含羞草研究社檚 a slightly different material.含羞草研究社

CIPP is expected to last 50 to 60 years.

To insert the liner, the sewer flow will be bypassed with two overland pipes monitored 24 hours a day.

One pipe will intercept at Hardy St., redirecting along the old rail bed and then following Clement Ave., and reconnecting to existing sewer lines on Vineland St. The other pipe will begin at Burtch Rd. between Highway 97 and Sutherland Ave. and rejoin the existing sewer line at Guisachan and Byrns roads.

The $7 million project begins next week and some intermittent single-lane alternating traffic is expected during construction.

含羞草研究社淭his is the first time using this (CIPP) and it含羞草研究社檚 a real chance for us to look at this as a new option,含羞草研究社 MacLean said. 含羞草研究社淲e含羞草研究社檒l see where it goes in the future with other utility possibilities.含羞草研究社
