With approximately 60,000 people expected to take part in this long weekend含羞草研究社檚 Canada Day festivities in downtown Kelowna, the waters of Okanagan Lake will be much busier than usual.

Kelowna RCMP are reminding the public of some useful tips to prevent on-water accidents.

含羞草研究社淭he RCMP含羞草研究社檚 vision is to eliminate senseless and preventable deaths on our waterways,含羞草研究社 reads a news release.

含羞草研究社淭he majority of accidents are caused by the boat operator and not by mechanical, equipment failure or environmental causes.含羞草研究社

Before heading on the water, boaters should always make sure there are enough lifejackets on board for everyone.

Human carelessness and speed are two of the largest contributors to injury, said Inspector Rob Pikola of the West Kelowna RCMP.

If swimming, RCMP are warning not to push your limits, as many drowning incidents are from fatigue and being too far from shore.

Police will be out on the water all weekend.
