Man handed life sentence for 2016 murder of Shuswap woman

Derek Lee Matthew Favell was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole in 12 years for the 2016 murder of Ashley Simpson. 

The sentencing took place at the Salmon Arm Law Courts on Wednesday June 12, 2024. 

Simpson, then 32, went missing from the Yankee Flats area near Salmon Arm in April 2016. 

Favell was charged with second-degree murder in December 2021,after Simpson含羞草研究社檚 remains were discovered in a wilderness area outside of Salmon Arm on Nov. 26, 2021.

What was supposed to be the first day of a scheduled 20-day trial on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, concluded when Derek Lee Mathew Favell pleaded guilty in Salmon Arm to killing Simpson.
