Break-ins, child abuse materials crime drop in Kelowna

含羞草研究社奒elowna RCMP saw a significant drop in break-and-enters and the making and distribution of child sexual abuse materials in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

A report going to council on Sept. 9 shows a nearly 38 per cent drop in break-and-enters and a 32 per cent drop in the making and distribution of child sexual abuse materials.

The city含羞草研究社檚 property crime rate continues to drop from 2022 numbers (3,663 incidents) to 2,707 incidents for 2024, and an overall decline of 11 per cent compared to 2023 (3,026 incidents).

含羞草研究社淩esearch indicates that repeat offenders, a small facet of our community, commit a disproportionate number of crimes and Kelowna RCMP is, increasingly and relentlessly, focused on repeat offenders,含羞草研究社 the report states.

Theft with violence and assaults are up 27 per cent and eight per cent respectively since 2023. Many of the incidents often involve people impacted by vulnerabilities such as homelessness, mental health and substance use. 

Arson continues to rise with an 81 per cent increase since 2023. Reporting procedures have improved with the Kelowna Fire Department which is a large driver contributing to the noted increase according to the report.

RCMP traffic interactions, including tickets and warnings, are down 25 per cent this year compared with 2023.

The report states that Kelowna含羞草研究社檚 Crime Severity Index, which measures the overall seriousness of crime year over year, is down 7.3 per cent since 2022.
