A motorhome was destroyed by a fire while its owners were away getting breakfast on July 21.

A couple enjoying a trip to the outdoors at the Ashnola campgrounds returned from breakfast in Keremeos to find their motorhome destroyed in a fire.

The Lower Similikameen Indian Band says two band members spotted the fire, calling it in and risking their safety to make sure no one was inside the vehicle.

The Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department was called in by the province to respond, even though the campground is outside its response area.

"We sent an engine and two bush trucks with 12 firefighters," said Keremeos fire chief Jordy Bosscha. "The landkeepers kept the fire from spreading into the brush and we suppressed the fully-involved motorhome."

No one was injured in the fire, and it was kept to the vehicle, which was fully destroyed by the flames.

BC Emergency Health Services and RCMP also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The LSIB also sent out a reminder that there is a ban on all open burning including campfires on LSIB land. The Kamloops Fire Centre also has a ban for the region.
