An early morning fire has resulted in significant damage to a house in East Vernon despite a quick response from fire crews. 

At approximately 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to reports of a structure fire in the 2000 block of 42nd Avenue. When crews arrived on scene, they confirmed a fully involved house fire, which extended into the attic. 

Firefighters immediately took action to battle the blaze, but the home still sustained significant damage. The City of Vernon Emergency Support Services program is now assisting displaced residents.

"Working smoke alarms are your first line of defence against fire. I urge all residents to change the batteries twice a year and have a clear fire escape plan in place," Fire Chief David Lind said in a media release from the city. "These simple but essential steps can make a significant difference in an emergency situation." 

BC Emergency Health Services, RCMP, FortisBC and BC Hydro also assisted on-scene.
